What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are the essence of plant extracts, stemming from roots, seeds, flowers, bark, leaves, or fruits that are steamed or pressed to release the compounds that produce the fragrance that is an essential oil. These natural oils are highly potent chemical compounds that not only create a scent but perform other functions in plants too, such as protecting the plant from hazardous environmental conditions and assisting with pollination. When you open a bottle of essential oil, your senses are filled with a natural occurring element that is truly pure!
What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils as a holistic healing treatment. Humans have used aromatherapy for centuries in the form of resins, balms, and oils for medicinal and religious purposes. These natural plant extracts were known to have both physical and psychological benefits. The actual term” aromatherapy” was coined by the French chemist, Rene-Maurice Gattefosse in 1937 who invented the word after an incident in which he discovered the healing power of essential oils in treating burns.
There are many ways to practice aromatherapy in your home, through the use of diffusion, sprays, bathing, lotions, steaming, hot and cold compresses, mask, or cleaning.
What Are Essential Oils Good For?
Essential oils are good for our senses. When inhaled, these scent molecules travel from the olfactory nerves directly to the emotional center of our brain, the amygdala. The many different fragrances and chemical makeups each have a unique effect and can be used in differing therapeutic ways. Depending on what symptoms you are looking to ease or what fragrances you prefer, there is a suitable essential oil for your needs.
Some of the more popular essential oils include:
Lavender oil: A relaxing scent that is often used to promote sleep and is calming for the mind and skin.
Tea tree oil: Also known as melaleuca, which has been used for treating and soothing the skin.
Peppermint oil: A bright scent that has been used to relieve headaches.
Lemon oil: This essential oil is often used in homemade cleaning products and as a mood booster.
Aromatherapy is a complimentary therapy, and you should talk to your doctor before using essential oils for medical care. There are some precautions you should take when using essential oils as they can interact with prescription medications and can exhibit side effects. As you explore the use of essential oils pay close attention how these oils affect you.
How do I find quality essential oils?
One important thing to consider when using essential oils is product quality. Purity is important, as impure oils can be adulterated with contaminants and synthetic fillers and unfortunately there are a lot of products out there that are not harvested correctly or contain stuff that isn’t listed on the label. I personally have been using doTERRA essential oils for over 8 years now and would love to share my experiences with you!
